Types of Massage
When muscles are stressed, they accumulate lactic acid, uric acid
and other cellular waste in and around muscle tissue. Massage helps
loosen muscle tissue, allowing the body to reabsorb these elements,
and helps restore blood and oxygen circulation. Because massage
releases many byproducts, it's important to drink plenty of water
after a session to help flush toxins from your body.
There are many corrective and therapeutic massage techniques, each
designed to achieve specific results. By combining different modalities,
I tailor each session to achieve specific goals to assist your body
in returning to its best form.
Swedish Massage refers to a variety of techniques
developed in the late 1700's by a Swedish doctor named Per Henrik
Ling. Swedish techniques are designed to relax muscles and assist
returning blood to the heart. The main purpose of Swedish massage
is to increase the oxygen flow in the blood and release toxins from
the tissues. Swedish Massage techniques include:
• Effleurage: Gliding strokes which
encourage the lymph system to reabsorb wastes and fluids.
• Petrissage: Kneading technique to loosen muscle adhesions and relax
tense muscles.
• Friction: Short circular or cross
fiber strokes designed to loosen and broaden muscle tissue.
• Vibration: Shaking movements of appendages
which loosen joints and "confuse" the surrounding tissue,
causing muscles to relax.
• Percussion: Brisk hacking or tapping.
Reflexology was brought to America in the early
1900's by Chinese immigrants and based on the belief that reflex
points on the feet and hands correspond to parts of the body. Finger
tip pressure is applied to specific areas of the feet to clear out
congestion and restore normal functioning. While many people find
it hard to believe that releasing congestion from a specific part
of the foot can relieve pain in somewhere else, I find this technique
very effective. Most people were not aware that they even had "knots"
in their feet. If you find it hard to accept that your feet represent
your entire body, don't worry, just enjoy a foot massage!
Deep Tissue massage focuses on the deeper layers
of muscle tissue. Using slow strokes and deep finger pressure on
contracted areas, deep muscle massage is used to release chronic
muscle tension. Deep tissue massage also helps to break up and eliminate
scar tissue and adhesions. Deep pressure focused on specific areas
may cause some soreness during or right after the massage. However,
when done correctly, the soreness dissipates within a day or two.
Trigger Point Therapy (TrP Tx)
- Don't assume the problem is at the place that hurts! Many aches,
pains, and symptoms are caused by trigger points in muscles. A trigger
point is a small muscle spasm, usually the size of pea, that refers
pain elsewhere. Displaced pain confuses people, including most doctors
since the spasm causing the pain is so small you probably don't
even know it's there.
Trigger Point Therapy was pioneered by Dr. Janet G. Travell, President
Kennedy's personal physician. Through years of research, she and
others mapped out hundreds of trigger point locations and the specific
areas to which they refer pain. Migraines can be caused by trigger
points in different neck muscles. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome can arise
from trigger points under the collar bone or in the forearm near
the elbow. Chronic conditions with symptoms that persist after treatment
by traditional medicine are likely candidates for trigger points.

Reiki (pronounced ray-key)
is a type of energy bodywork which relies on the ancient belief
that life force energy, chi, flows through all things. This life
force runs throughout pathways in the body, nourishing organs and
cells and supporting vital functions. When this energy is disrupted,
illness and disease may result. Through training, reiki practitioners
learn how to access energy flow through the hands to transmit it
to others. Reiki is used to accelerate healing, assist the body
in cleansing toxins, balance the subtle energy flows by releasing
blockages, and helps you heal from within.
